National Zoo

If you are fond of wildlife, then National Zoo in Delhi will surely delight you. Established in 1959, the Delhi Zoo positions itself near the Purana Qila on the Delhi-Mathura road. It is home to many animals including rare and exotic white tigers. The place is a favorite haunt of children.

Counted among the best zoos in India, it abounds in natural beauty that makes it a perfect place to take a stroll. It also has a unique collection of flora, fauna and avifauna species. Popularly referred as Delhi National Zoological Park, it sprawled over an area of 214 acres. It is home to more than 2,000 species of animals and birds from Australia, Africa, America and Asia.

The conception of zoo in Delhi was provided by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. The sketch of this zoo was designed by Major Weinman of Colombo and Carl Hagenbeck of West Germany.


Delhi National Zoological Park is among the well-known tourist attractions of Delhi and receives a great number of visitors round the year.

Some of the popular wildlife attractions of the zoo include Axis Deer, Zebras, Giraffe, Chimpanzee, Hippopotamus, Wild Buffalo and Spider Monkey. It also houses several species of birds as well as water animals.

The underground Reptile Home Complex is popular for its rich and wide collection of snakes such as Python, King Cobra and many others.

Apart from these, the zoo also provides shelter to more than 200 varieties of trees. The zoo also houses an early 17th century Kos Minar, built by Mughal emperor Jehangir. Visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the zoo through this red sandstone gate.
